Types of Aviation Engineering & Training


Aviation Engineering & Training deals with the analysis, design, development and manufacture of the various types of aviation devices used in commercial, military and civilian applications. These devices are used to support and meet the goals of aviation personnel in a highly dynamic and challenging environment. This branch includes the study, analysis, design and manufacture of the many different types of aircraft. One branch that is growing at an exponential rate is the field of air traffic control. Air traffic controllers (ATC's) are responsible for managing the flow of airplanes into and out of runways. Their primary duties include movement, coordination, and communication with other air traffic controllers. They manage scheduled routing, control air traffic in assigned air fields, and communicate weather and traffic conditions to pilots and air traffic dispatchers. ATC's obtain their certification after completion and successfully completing a course in Advanced Aeronautical Flight Control (AFFC).

Engineers in this field are responsible for the analysis and design of a wide variety of systems found inside and outside of an airfield. They develop and manufacture the various systems and equipment that are required to support and maintain a commercial, military or civilian aircraft. ATC's must also know how to use new technologies and how to keep up with advances in this fast changing field. Another branch of ATC is the Electronic Air Traffic Controller (EAT). They perform all the necessary duties of an ATC such as radio transmissions, receiving and issuing radio signals, managing control systems, analyzing and determining air traffic problems, and communicating to pilots and air traffic dispatchers. They must also perform emergency duties and report traffic issues. They obtain their certificate of clearance after completing and successfully completing a course in Electronic Air Traffic Control (EAT) during which time they will learn to receive and decode emergency communications, air traffic control systems, air carrier operations, weather reports, and more. 

One major component of ATC training and testing is the analysis of aircraft systems. This includes the analysis of electrical and electronic systems, control systems, and safety features like anti-icing, fire control systems, and structural integrity. An ATC must also be able to perform calculations and solve for solutions to complex aerodynamic problems.

Another branch of airframe and aircraft engineering is Marine Aircraft. Engineers for this type of job specialize in designing, building, and operating marine aircraft. Most pilots of these types of aircraft are former pilots of transports, corvettes, and other sea going ships. Some engineers may have additional specialist training from other branches of aviation.
